OETS

OETS, Oregon Educational Technology Standards, is a guideline with technology standards that teachers must follow in the state of Oregon. Three of the six standards are creativity and innovation, communication and collaboration, and research and information fluency.
One standard is creativity and innovation. Students need to use technology to use creative thinking and problem solving skills. They can create powerpoints or presentations, websites, blogs, and videos. A teacher can assign students to use yodio and then put it in the classroom website that they are working on together.
Another standard is communication and collaboration. Students can use google docs and collaborate together on a presentation. They can use 4shared.com to share their papers with the teacher or their peers. They can use Tokbox and Skype to communicate with others in other countries or they can make blogs to communicate information with others. Teachers can have their students learn about other cultures through technology. For example, a classroom can Skype another classroom in another country and show eachother an activity or game.
Another standard is research and information fluency. Students use digital tools to gather and use information. The internet can be used to find and gather information. If a student needs to find information about a specific thing they can google it and find relevant information on their topic. Students can also analyze and evaluate information or data by using a spreadsheet on google docs. Google docs is a great tool to use to make presentations, spreadsheets, or documents and can be accessed from other locations.

Multimedia Group Project

Our group did our Multimedia project on 4Shared.com. I found that this tool can be useful in the classroom for storing files, music, photos, and videos. What I really enjoyed about this project was learning and using screentoaster. It was also a tool that I have never used before and was alot of fun. Below is a presentation on 4Shared.com.

4Shared.com can be used as a tool for students to save their files and then retrieve it from a different location. It can also be used to store their files and share it with anyone. I think that this tool is useful for older students. For example, a teacher can have a student upload and share an important document when the student is not able to be in class. The students can also upload and share their papers with their peers to get feedback.

Analyzing Student Data in a Spreadsheet

I used google spreadsheets to analyze data. By using this tool, I was able to learn the basics of making a spreadsheet. I have never used a spreadsheet before, and this is a great tool to be able to use in recording data as well as making charts. I feel this was an important tool to learn for my future as a classroom teacher.

This data is for test 1-10, showing the average tests scores for test 6-10. I highlighted in red the students who had a test score below average and made a new chart showing those results below.

Overall, the below average students improved with each test. Although they were below average from the whole class, they did show improvement which is important to recognize. Without separating these students out from the rest of the class, I may have missed their improvements with each test. This is pleasing to the teacher and then the teacher can further her instruction to help those students achieve even more. Teachers can help their students learn test taking skills and also teach how to analyze what is important to learn for test. The teacher can also periodically review material covered in class to try to improve the test scores.

Below is a graph showing the progress of each of the students who had test scores below average for tests 6-10.

Skype

My brother has been trying to get me to use Skype for a long time to communicate with my mom who lives in a different state. I use yahoo instant messenger with WebCam to see my friends and family. This could be another way to call someone and see them and communicate with them. This tool can be used in the classroom in a variety of ways. For example, students could contact other students in another country and see how different cultures approach learning. They can communicate with another country and hear another language they may be studying.

My Favorite Web 2.0 Tools

Web 2.0 is using the web to store, share, and access files through the internet. You don't need to be at your home computer to access these files because they are stored over the web. They can be accessed anywhere and at anytime. These tools can be extremely beneficial in the classroom. They can be used for a variety of subjects and can really enhance creativity for students. When using these tools it provides a different learning experience for children rather than just seeing it up on the board. It also educates children with some knowledge of computer and the internet which is a huge aspect of our lives.
One of the tools that I explored was Dabbleboard. Dabbleboard is an online white board. You can draw pictures, picks shapes, draw lines and arrows, insert text and many other features. This tool can be used to make diagrams to present to the students instead of drawing it on the white board in the classroom. This can be used to engage students in learning by using items that would spark their interest. For example, you can create a diagram of the water cycle by using attractive pictures and drawing lines. You can even instert text and label the parts of the water cycle. The online white board can be used for many different activities. I would find it useful to show to the class and map and show a route from one place to the other. They also can help create diagrams that can be shared with other students by each person would be given a destination and wouild create the route to get from one location to the place they are given. Watching and then being able to practice a tool can greatly benefit students learning.
Another tool that I explored was TokBox. All you need to use TokBox is a web cam and a microphone. This would be a great tool to use for students giving a speech. After each student is recorded it can all be played for the class. I think that this can be used for presenting a speech about a famous person. Each child can get dressed up and do a speech in front of the camera. I think that this tool can be especially helpful with students who are shy because they can do this in privacy and then see how well they do. TokBox can also be used for students to do a biography about themselves. One other way to use TokBox is for the teacher to do something at home and then present it to the class. Using this tool provides another fun way to be creative and provide a different learning experience.
